Greyhound Discussions & Pictures / Update on Oz now 7 1/2 months old
« on: July 11, 2005, 04:55:24 am »
Hi All,

Oz is now 7 1/2 months old and 56 lbs. He is growing so fast. He is now taller than his sister Jessica who is 3 years old. He was de sexed 3 weeks ago. The vet called me and did not ask but told me to come get my dogs, I had left Jessica to be micro chipped. I got there and they both were singing to everyone along with the rottie in the next crate. He frighten my husband the next day when he dug up a piece of a stick and got it stuck in his mouth. Stephen could not get it out and we had to an emergency office visit to get it removed. Other than that he had no complications. Sutures out on the 4th of July and had his first run on Sunday the 10th. He is as good as new. Here is some recent pictures of Oz and his sister Jessica.

;) He sure is a looker. I love a brindle greyhound. I have two myself. Jessica who is a white brindle and Oz who is still a puppy he has gone from a black brindle to what that now call a light brindle. Who knows what he will look at when he is a year old. How old is Boo and is he a retired racer like my Jessica?

No that was taken in country Victoria in Australia. Bea has a huge property and has 3 dams on it. Nero from what Bea told me has always just gone in as deep as he can and just stays there in hot weather. My husband took that picture in January 2005 (summer here).
Here is a picture of Nero and his friend Piper later that day.

 :) Imogen,

Here is a picture of Bea's Nero at the dam at her place. He loves getting really deep into the water.

:) You know what you get when you adopt a greyhound? Another greyhound. You can't stop with one, we have 2 and once we move to a bigger place with a bigger yard we will foster a dog. They are just wonderful dogs. It's funny at times they are more cat like than dog like if that makes sense. Unlike other big dogs you can put food between 2 fingers and they will eat it without biting you. No more put it in the palm of your hand and hope you don't get caught by teeth.

:)Hi Imogen, When we were talking on messenger you didn't tell me you had posted new pictures of Gingko. They are lovely. I must say he has gotten much more confident than when Winsome first rescured him from the RSPCA. You can tell from the pictuce she took of him when she first got him and the ones you have taken since you brought him home with you. I wish we lived closer to each other I am sure Jessica and Oz would love to play with him. Are you going to the GAP Christmas party on the 20th of Nov.? If so we will be there so we can meet in person. You already know Hannah and Artemas, but wait until you meet Angie, Maddison, Nero, Piper, Honey and the rest that I have had the pleasure to meet. They are so fun to see them greet each other. It is like they have known each other all of there lives not the first time they have layed eyes on each other.

:) Greyhounds shead but not as much as most dogs. Our last dog was a German Sheppard X and Tessa lost her hair 10 1/2 months of the year. It was always all over the place.

I agree it is a stupid law. Greyhounds are very gentle unless something is running ie rabbit, cat etc. But then all dogs would run after it. They have laws about a lot of dog they feel are dangeous. So yes, there are other breeds that are suppose to wear muzzles. It comes from a old British law that they have not changed here yet. The green collars have their GAP number on it in case they are lost. When I registerd Jessica with the local council they took that number down for their records. It does sound much more complicated here than it does in the states. I do agree on muzzles when they are running because then tend to nip at each other and because their skin is so thin they tend to get skin tears easily. On the attached picture you can see some GAP greyts with their collars on.

Imogen and I both live in Victoria in Australia. They have strange laws about greyhounds here. Only the state of Victoria and now I think New South Wales and South Australia are in the process of changing the law. The only problem is that they have to be a greyhound that has gone through the states rescure group called GAP. All other greyhounds have to wear a muzzle with they are out in public. I have 1 GAP dog Jessica that has her green collar like Gingko, but my puppy Oz because he blind in one eye might not be able to go through GAP for his collar when he is 8 months old. I am not sure it the law is the same in the U.S. but here the RSPCA and GAP or other rescue groups can not "sell" a dog that has an illness. Because of this law I don't know if Oz will be able to get his green collar in 2 more months or not. Because of this I have had to give him a race name and register him with the greyhound racing board so he would be legally in our name. I was lucky I found out about this just 6 days before he was going to be fixed. I could not register him if he was not intack. Here you can't even register a greyhound with your local council unless it is a GAP dog. Lots of red tap. Sometimes I wish I was back home in the U.S., but I might not have ever found my true loves Greyhounds.

Hi Imogen,

I love that picture of Gingko. Imogen and I belong to the same group here in Victoria. Like Imogen I am not that close to it, about 2  hours away by car. I am not sure about Gingko and water, Jessica would not get in a wadding pool that I got her but when we went to Bea's house in the country she has a huge property with several dams. Her Nero, Honey, and Daisy her non greyt, and Anne's Piper had a great time in the dam, Jessica I was surprised joined in the fun, but since she was on a lead did not get to get to deep in the water. Oz is my water baby. He puts both feet and sometimes all 4 feet in his water bucket and also will go into the wadding pool when it has water. Of course now that it is winter he will not be doing that again until Oct. or Nov.

Love the picture of the greyhound what we down south called the wash tub when I was a kid. Gretys are very smart so of course when it is hot lets cool off.

That is so sad about those poor greyts. They are lucky to have found homes with your groups. I hope they all find good homes. It just kills me when I see a greyhound cross that they have in the newspaper for sale as a hunting dog. Lets face it they are a sight dog do you really think they are going to come back or just continue going after something they see in the distance. Anyone who would think a greyhound would make a good hunting dog needs there head examined. Advice on the puppies it is best to keep them together they need lots of play if you have 2 of them together they can play and get tired together. Jessica who was only 2 1/2 when we got Oz did and does not like to play enough for Oz.

 :)Hi Heather,
Greyhounds are the most loving dogs I have ever seen. I am new to the breed having only had Jessica since mid December and Oz since Feb. 5th. I have been to several events with Jessica and Oz, weill 1 more with Jessica before we got Oz. They are just great with everyone old and young alike. I am not surprise the greyhound you were petting wanted to follow you. They follow those they bond with. They become a like a shadow. I would tell your brother in law he might want to foster a greyhound to see how similar they are to whippets. I think if he is like my husband he will fall in love with the first greyt he meets. My husband was always into big dog but more into German Sheppards, now it is greyhounds for him. He has bonded so much with Oz, it is like seeing a man with his son. We don't have children but Oz just cuddles with him just like a toddler would. You might want to get a greyhound yourself once your beautiful Ranger gets older. Greyhounds like company but I don't think it has to be another greyhound.
