Golden Retriever Discussions / Re: Confusing Behavior
« on: April 21, 2005, 05:05:49 pm »
sometimes young dogs can go through a "im a big pantie waste stage".
my 5 month old male bouvier barks and growls at people. what i do is tell him no in a frim calm voice and then pat him heartily on his side or chest to reassure him.
he always will run back to the 8 yr. old fran and behind her.
he is simply having a confidence issue at the moment. this is why i take him with me everywhere i go and have him meet and greet kids, as well as all kinds of people.
i explain to people he is  big chicken right now and i am getting him used to meeting folks.
the problem is he is also in a growing spurt and is getting large and peopole are not as willing to help you have your dog with his issues.
as far as chasing people, not good. keepin them on leash is a good idea till they are broke of that one.
fran likes to race out to pour sidewalk barking, if she sees someone which usually scares the bajeebas out of them.
she got her bad habit from years of being in an enclosed fenced pen and years of fence running, barking.
good luck.

Wolfhound Discussions & Pictures / Re: Dog Beds.... what kind?
« on: April 21, 2005, 09:13:51 am »
our dogs (bouviers) have a bed, forget who makes them but they are high grade aluminum frame, covered with plastic with a convas middle. they are designed for heavy dogs and are extremely durable. the kennel my dogs came from has like 30 of them and they endure any weather, you can hose them off and she has only had one break in like 6 years. they are edpensive but prevent the knee and elbow trauma large breeds get from layin on hard surfaces.
we also have a toddler bed that i got off the curb for free....haha. its a plastic frame, with a reg crib size mattress.

have you ever seen "the dog whisperer" on animal planet? i highly recommend it.
you have to be firm, calm, and most of all.....PERSIS TANT!
if you say to a dog, you are not allowed on the couch, you have to mean it always. my dobes used to lay thier head on my knee and ask first with soulful eyes. they were allowed on one couch only and had to ask first.
i commend you for taking your baby to classes. every resposible pet owner should realize if for no other reason, even if you are an expert in training, the atmosphere is superb for socializing.
i have been owning, training for 30 some years and still go to handling, obediance classes from time to time when i have a baby to socialize them.

Doberman Pictures / Re: Doberman

on the dobe colors;
did you knowthat the fawn doberman color is a diluted gene background from the more commonly known red and rust colored types, and that the blues are a diluted gene background from the original black doberman?
and that because the genes are diluted and washed out so to speak, that is why the fawn and blues have so many genetic skin conditions? particulary the fawns. they seem to be more disposed to skin problems.
very few people are aware there are even 4 colors of dobermans. i specialized in the fawns, and when i took them out to the public, they were frequently confused with weimeraners, danes, hounds, etc.
specially if it was before the ears were done.to increase soundness, you have to back breed to soundly color coated dogs such as a black dog with 2 black parents.  there are generations of genetics that go behind creating healthy fawn and blue dobermans.
personally i think todays dobermans have become too streamlined and refined, i prefer the old, heavy boned, german style. to me they look more like greyhounds. because of thier popularity, they have lost the original flavor. unfortunately. popularity usually means the ruination of a breed.
on a brighter note, anyone remmeber the movie "those amazing dobermans"?
i love the tick tick tick of a well muscled ,well moving dobe trotting down a tile hallway or across a linoleum floor.
they are the apitimy of a perfect breed designed for a specific reason, a perfectly square animal, that can stop, turn on a dime, can jump, run, and that alert gaze of eye. even a poor example of a doberman pinscher is still a marvel of dog to behold.
can ya tell i am partial to the breed? haha

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Keeping your dog cool
« on: April 21, 2005, 07:45:24 am »
i am a groomer for many years and have shaved many long haired and double coated dogs. shving the belly does help as well as the kiddie pools. it is not harmful if you are not ever planning to show your pet. for thier comfort. this is what happens when you chose a breed that is not suited to the climent that you live in.
they can be left with varying degrees of length (strictly preference) and yes, the coat does serve as insulation against the sun. i prefer to leave them around a half inch long to an inch depending on coat type.
the dogs are much more comfortable. and dogs do not have sweat galnds so yes they cool naturally through paws, belly and by panting.
and i have had people tell me that if you shave your dog, they will never be the same, or will be embarrassed, etc.
dogs pick up on the owners vibes and if you laugh at them, or feel they look horrid, they will sense that.
i used to explain to my customers to tell thier dogs they are pretty and love them so they are proud of thier new do.
most dogs are thrilled and it gives them vitality again. i have seen older dogs on deaths door spring back to life after having a haircut.
ultimately, if you live in a hoit climent and own a cold weather climent dog, its your responsibilty to that animal to make them as comfortable as you can in that environment.
so to clip, or shave is the humane thing to do.
