I am not sure she is too young for supplements, and I would think the sooner the better for prevention of problems later on.  I would be careful introducing new things though- maybe limit it to one new thing per week, or even every other week, so you know what she reacts to so you can stop immediately.  Right now, you have no way of knowing what the reaction is to, so you will need to try each thing separately to figure out which is the cause.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / Re: Mastiff w/ docked Tail?

I think Neos are supposed to have theirs docked by 1/3.  Jesse's isn't, and it curls up over his back like a spring.

I am pretty sure it is against the AKC Mastiff standard to dock anything on them.  I have been around a LOT of mastiffs, some show, some just pet, but none have ever been docked.  I have heard of one, in rescue currently who just had his surgically docked due to an infection thaat would not go away.

How about a first-hand case?  I live out in the country, five miles from the nearest town.  Early in the morning, I would put our collie pup Dakota out on his exercise run while I got the kids up and ready for school.   This run is 50 ft long, has a nice strong pulley attached to a 20 ft cable, so he had a lot of room to play while he was out there.  This whole setup is only 25ft from my livingroom window, and if I had been standing at the window I would have seen it happen, I am sure.  Anyway, he was out on the run, and I was getting things ready for the kids' school day.  When I went out to bring him in for breakfast, he was gone, but his run and collar with tags were still attached.  He had been out for less than 30 minutes.  Now I *KNOW* he could not slip his collar, and whenever I let him off, the first thing he would do was run for the house, so he would have been right close by if he had gotten loose on his own.  We never saw him again.  The following summer, I was talking to a guy up the road, and it seems the neighbor between my house and the one I was talking to, was raising litters of beagle puppies, about 10 litters a year, and selling them to a class B dealer out of Ohio.  I never had any real evidence to file a case, but it sure seems a bit too much of a coincidence to me.

I wish I had seen this earlier.  Has anyone contacted FORM?  Is the reserve for an adoptive home through the shelter?  If so, I would really much rather see her go into rescue, as they could temperament test her and prepare the new family for all things particular to mastiffs.  If I didn't have two recovering from surgery right now, I would foster her in a heartbeat.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Help with down stay..please
« on: September 29, 2006, 07:09:42 am »
I agree- you have gotten great ideas from everybody.  The only thing I can add, is that unless you have already done the down-stay training starting from a few seconds at a time, on up, adding a few more seconds each time, you can't really expect him to do it well throughout your entire meal time.  You would need to start out with low distractions, several times daily (can be done whenever he wants something as suggested) but work it up to longer and longer times as he is able.   Dogs don't generalize, so whatever training you are working on will need to be practiced in all sorts of different places and under different distractions, for him to understand that "down-stay" means the same thing whether you are at home alone in your kitchen as it does in the middle of petsmart with a crowd around you.  Also, many people don't realize that having your dog do a down-stay while you are right there facing them is completely different in your dog's mind, than having him do a down-stay when you are across the room with your back to him, or in another room.  Good luck with him.

Mainly rice with eggs and or tuna, little beef sometimes mixed with burns dog food   Craig

I'm  no expert, but I wonder if this diet actually has everything a growing puppy needs.  Isn't rice mainly just a filler to make them feel full faster?

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Anyone use this bed?
« on: September 23, 2006, 11:23:05 am »
Now that I have a minute to sit down, I will tell you what I did with them.  The girls were a bit iffy about getting on them at first, I think the rough fabric bothered them, but also, as someone else said, it stretches a bit when weight is put on it.  What I did was make foam mattresses for each, with a nice cover, with a zipper so the covers could be easily washed, and stitched elastic loops on each corner to fasten them to the beds, and they *LOVE* them.

If I knew 22 years ago what I know now, I would have had myself fixed, avoided children altogether, and had a houseful of dogs instead!

We use the cooleroo beds for each of our mastiffs, including Imani, who is 210 lbs right now.  We have even had TWO on one bed with no issues, other than the one who was on it first complaining about being squooshed!

IF you happen to have it on hand, peppermint essential oil, 2 drops on his tongue should settle his tummy.  As for the runs, I think they will pretty much last til all of the toxin (cookie) is out of his system.  If you have some gingersnaps around the house, they would help too.  Settling his tummy probably won't have an immediate response from the business end.
