I will give another vote for the Saint Bernard. Saints are truely wonderful, but instead of telling you how great they are I will tell you why you might not want one.

1. They are HUGE. Only second to the OEM in largest dog size. At 33 inches and 190lbs, Hutch is BIG. So with their monsterous size comes all of the monsterous vet bills. Antibiotics for a 190lb dog are not cheap. A car will not comfortably fit 2 giant breed dogs. They do think that they are lap dogs, and they will find a way to fit part of their body onto your lap, so be prepared for legs that lose all feeling.

2. DROOL!! If anyone tells you that they have a Saint that does not drool, then they do not have a Saint. I wipe drool from my walls, drool from my ceiling, drool from the floor, drool off of the television. We have drool rags everywhere. Oh, and most of all they love to drool on your guests.

3. They do shed. Not outrageous amounts, but a male weighing on average 175lbs has a very big body. Big body means lots of fur to cover it. I guess now is the time to mention the rough and smooth coats that Saints can have. A rough will leave more of a shedding mess behind than the smooth, but they do both shed! Black is not a color that we wear inside of our house. I have some of my favorite black things in plastic bags to protect them from the fur!

4. Especially important because you are wanting to rescue. There have been many BYB's for Saints because of all of the Beethoven movies. We all know that BYB=Problems. Saints do have a variety of health problems typical to the breed. Not only are their a multitude of joint problems, but eye, heart, bloat, and many more, and very important to note, temperment problems. SAints should be bred with temperment in mind, They are suppose to be gentle giants, but irresponsible breeding has lead to temperment problems wothy of considering. It is not uncommon for Saints to be same sex aggressive, and especially because you have an intact male already another male might not suit you so well. This is important to consider especially if you were to adopt an adolescent Saint who has not fully matures and come into their own yet! The temperment differences between a year old Saint and a 2 year old can be noticed. What was once your happy-go-lucky year old may now bark when a stranger comes to the door, or not like other dogs of the same sex. Not all Saints are like this by a long shot, but it is important to remember that BYB's have played a huge role in the surge of Saints in shelters and rescues and that Saint Bernards are on the list of top ten dog bite fatalities measured by the Center for Disease and Control.

5. They are very much people dogs. They don't have to be right on top of you all of the time, but they do have to be included in the family. They thrive because of the love their family gives them! Because of this can be known to have seperation anxiety, luckily a problem I don't have. It doesn't take long for an anxious Saint to destroy a couch.

Saints take a special kind of owner, like all of the giant breeds do. But the thing that keeps me coming back to the Saint Bernard is the goofy, loving, noble, companionship that they provide.

That's the worst part about it, he is only 8 months old, severely disabled, and is still intact. However the good news is that tomorrow there will be an attempt to adopt him out of GG's if at all possible, but he may be worth more to Burt and Tracy intact than an adoptable. Please have best wishes for this boy and his sister Stella the Saint Bernard. It is said that the Saint Bernard with the IW has been taken in by a family, so it is very unlikely that the two are together.
If the adoption is a success than the IW will be recieving the surgery that he desperatly needs to live a pain free life.

I just checked with my FIL(a manager at Halifax airport), and he said you should try United Airlines. They do take dogs and they do fly into Halifax. I hope that this might help you a little. I live 10 minutes from the Halifax airport and am willing to help in any way I can!

I haven't posted on here in ages but BPO has helped so many dogs in need of good homes that I just had to give it a go. I don't know much about him, I am waiting on a reply. Because of the location he is in I highley suspect he is a brother to my Hutch, from a later litter. A BYB in the area near this beautiful boy has been 'breeding' her bitch every heat to supplement her income. I am infuriated by this woman..... >:(. Anyhow, this boy really needs a home where he can be an only dog. If anyone is interested I may even be able to help with some of the transportation, especailly because I will be going to NB in two weeks. PLease keep an ear open for this guy!! Here is his petfinder information

Oh, how sad... Especially because they are pits and are already struggling so hard with a poor reputation. Not only is it how they are raised that can lead to a poor temperment, but poor breeding practises with poor tempermented dogs can lead to alot of the problems with pits. THREE INTACT DOGS???? TWO MALES AND A FEMALE???? Sadly your co-worker will most definaltly be contributing to the horrible statistics on pit bulls. She is creating the perfect recipe for disaster. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this person on a daily basis, and who knows, maybe the chance will arise that you can offer some good advice without seeming like the know-it-all bad guy.

And if all fails....I agree with Lucah's Folks ;).

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Info on Bloat!
« on: October 09, 2006, 08:40:05 am »
The Perdue study on bloat is the LARGEST study to date that has been conducted on Bloat and gastric torsion. 1920 dogs were used and 86 of them bloated. 110% higher incedence for bloat from raised feeders is too high of a correlation for me. Maybe the study can't determine why bloat occured in 110% more dogs with raised feeders than those who didn't, but they did determine a correlation. Even now I find it hard to find a newer study that contradicts Perdue's findings. It is one of those things, you have to do what you feel is best for your dog. For us, we go for the old fashion bowl on the floor method.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: How do I solve a barking problem?
« on: October 05, 2006, 10:15:35 am »
My Abbey is half husky, but don't tell her that, she thinks that she is full ;). Anyone who knows anything about husky's knows that they are very vocal! When she was a pup she would bark and woo about everything! Of course we couldn't have her do this all of the time and a behaviorist told us to teach her to bark and woo on command. Praise her when she does this on command and a firm NO or QUIET when it is unwanted. She quickly caught on! Of course when we are home and she wants to talk to us, that's ok, but she knows when we tell her enough, that enough is enough!! Good luck!
