American Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / Fresca is home!
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:42:50 pm »
Well, she's finally home.  She is very shy and taking some time to get into her new surroundings.  We went to the vet today and she checked out well.  She's soooo beautiful.  Fresca is 8 weeks she weighs 20lbs. and should double in size in 10 - 14 weeks.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / THE DAY HAS COME!
« on: October 11, 2006, 05:14:09 am »
We are sooooo excited.  We are going to get our little baby in November.  This was just like a pregnancy.  We're all prepared, her crate with a custom cover to match the curtains, a basket of toys, a pink studded collar and a crystal name tag,  her dog bed and bowls both in place.  This little girl is going to be spoiled!  We did change her name, last minute.  My son was not happy with "Willa Majesta"  Which means noble protector.  It has been changed to "Fresca".  On her papers I will have "Fresca Willa Majesta."  Hey, big dog, big name.  I met a neighbor with a Mastiff and have already set up a playdate.

I'm going out to buy a pet carrier today.  Does anyone know the size and or weight of an 8 week old AM?javascript:void(0);

I've mentioned on other posts that I have volunteered for the "Guiding Eyes".  They feed their dogs Iams.  They ask us to soak the hard food in water for an hour before we feed them.  I never thought it may be because of their teeth but possibly.  They don't want us introducing any table food, Just in case the future owner doesn't welcome that.  Give it a shot.

"Two things that we have not tried yet are the injections and gold bead implants. I couldn't find anyone in the area that performs them, but I am going to look again."
I don't know where you live but I'm in the Westchester, NY area.  If you find someone here who can help you; You're welcome to stay at my house.  We have a large guest room with a seperate bath.  We have no dogs yet, we're waiting on an AM.
I know this can be a very difficult time.  I hope you find what you need.

Have you talked to anyone at Tufts Veterinary about Zoey?

Two things that we have not tried yet are the injections and gold bead implants. I couldn't find anyone in the area that performs them, but I am going to look again.

I don't know where you live.  If you find someone who can treat Zoey near Westchester, NY you are welcome to stay here.  We have a guest room and seperate bath.  There are no dogs in the house yet. (We're waiting on an AM)
I know at this time you want to do anything you can.

Unfortunately, I know the feeling too well.
My dog was a very big Lab.  He lived a long, full, happy life.  He was about 120 lbs and very tall (for a lab).  His hips got so bad he was falling up the stairs.  The only way he could go outside would be for my parents to carry him with a sling.  My mom felt they should have made the decision 3 months earlier.  he couldn't get up at all.  Then the final decision was made.
You have to weigh the quality of life.  You never want to see them go.  We knew Zak (the Lab) was in a great deal of pain.
I know this is so difficult for you.  It is like any other family loss.
I hope this helps.  I'll pray for you.

We volunteer with the Guiding Eyes dogs.  When one of the dogs get diarrhea, in our care, we are told to fast them.  Slowly start introducing food.  I wish I had the written directions.  I'm sure your vet will tell you.
Did your baby eat anything off the ground outside?  One of my pups was chewing on something.  I thought it was grass.  It ended  up being goose poop.  He had the same liquid problem.  The guiding eyes supplies us with a powder to give to the puppies.  It helps with dehydration.  It cleared up in a day or two.
I hope everything works out.

The best I've seen so far is Petsmart.  It's $230, free shipping and that's with one divider and the pan.

I know some of you think this subject has been beaten to death, but it's a real blessing for us new members.  I have been researching myself to death.  Reading this thread has been very enlighting.  I am on a waiting list for an AM though I did research on both AM and OEM.  They are both beautiful.  I'd kiss them both on the mouth drool and all.  I do see the AM as a mutt. But so am I, and I turned out okay.
Thank you all for your input.  It really does help.

American Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / What size crate for an AM?
« on: March 15, 2006, 07:04:17 pm »
Do I just get the biggest crate I can find?  So far that would be 37"w x 54d x 45h.  Does anyone have a particular one they like best?  Do you put those comfy cushions at the bottom?  Do you wait until they are more mature?  My experience with puppies tells me they would rip that bedding up in no time.
Thanks.

American Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / Re: Help Name Our Puppy!
« on: March 14, 2006, 11:38:01 am »
I was also looking for a perfect name for our future female AM.  I found a wonderful website  www.thinkbabyn ames.com.   What you can do is find a name by meaning and sex.  So for example,  If you want aboys names  meaning "gentle"  that's what you enter.  All names that mean gentle will come up.  They are derived from German, French, Celtic, Latin; everything.  Some are very different others you hear all of the time.
As I mentioned in your other post, we chose "Willa Majesta"  Willa meaning resolute protector, and Majesta meaning royal, bearing dignity.
It's been great fun finding a name.  And it means more knowing there is some real meaning behind it.

ENJOY!

We are on the waiting list for a Fawn female.   I know how excited you must be.
We plan on naming her "Willa Majesta"  Which means Unwavering protector and royal, bearing dignity.
As for the woman who can't convince her husband.  I was in the same boat.  I did so much research.  I presented it to him like a work presentation.  All the facts about the breed, both good and bad.  I looked into vets in the area with Mastiff experience.  I found a place that boards large breeds, and got the price. I bought a great book about the care and training of Mastiffs. I had a comeback for every comment he had.
There is so much information on the internet about the breed.  It could help your case.
If you have any questions for me I'd be happy to answer them.
