Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: fence fighting
« on: March 04, 2006, 01:57:21 pm »
I have 6 ft wooden privacy fence around 2 sides and the back of my yard.  The 3rd side is 8ft chain link. When my dobes are in the yard, they can pretty much handle just a few exchanged barks at the neighbor's dog (a Sheltie that is inside most of the time) then it's over.  But there is a guy on a different street than me that walks 2 poodles and a shiz tzu together all the time, and he walks them past the chain link side of my yard. (My yard is adjacent to a little league ball diamond, hence the 8 ft chain link, and people walk their dogs there when it's not ball season) OMG--Darmok and one of the poodles have this intense dislike for each other and if there were ever a weak spot in the fence, I'm sure that Dar would rip that little fuzzball to shreds! The poodle has an attitude, and the owner even told me "he likes to start fights"...so I'm wondering why does he walk them right past my dogs when they are outside, then? Arrrgh! PEOPLE!

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Gentle Leaders
« on: February 26, 2006, 12:04:41 pm »
Since this was brought up again, I have to put in my experience.
Ever since Nigel's growly-bitey episodes lately I have been taking him for walks every day. I use a gentle leader to control his head AND a martingale collar around his neck with a leash. This is so if he were to lunge, the collar around his neck would catch him instead of having his head pulled to the side too quickly by the GL. Sure it looks funny and I am practically 'driving' him with reins, but I am telling you he is now walking like a perfect gentleman and there is always slack in both my leads! ;D Success!!!

I have done that same exact thing with sasha--a leash hooked to her GL, and a second one hooked to her regular collar, and yes, it does look like 'driving a team of horses', but it's just one lone dog! But I didnt care how it looked---it worked, and Sasha was very well behaved because of it!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Digital cameras ?

I have a Kodak Easyshare, also.  (Got my advice before buying it from here, too!) Entire package (pre-Christmas sale at Wal Mart was $199.00)The printer dock is great, because it acts as a camera battery charger also--keeps the camera fully charged all the time! I dont print out too many pics using it, because of the price of the photo paper! But it's there for when I do want it.  Several times, I've had company, took a really good pic of everyone, and printed out a nice 4" x 5" photo for them to take home with them!  Just bought a Lexmark printer/copier/scanner last week, and it also will print photos, but just not as quickly as the camera dock.  It will print bigger than a 4 x 5, though, which is also good.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Darmok Is A Great Baby-sitter
« on: February 25, 2006, 01:15:26 pm »
My niece had to go on an unexpected trip to Fla. yesterday, and asked me to puppy-sit her teeny-tiny little 4 mo. old Rat Terrier pup, Toby till she gets back on Wednesday.  Well, I already have an 8 mo. old Rattie, so I said ok.  Took the 2 pups and Dar to the ballpark this morning (temp was 24 degrees, but sunny--not so bad!) and she proved to be such a great baby-sitter! She watched over the two of them, and played with them, even. She laid down on her belly to play with them so she wouldnt hurt them! She is the best dog, I swear! Toby was amazed at such a Giant!

Your doberkids are so shiny in their pics!  How do you get them to look like that?  My pound puppy needs work on hers and has flaky skin we need to get rid of.  I'll have to recheck to see when she can have a bath (spayed on the 11th).  Hopefully the oatmeal shampoo I got her will help.

My dobes get a fish-oil & vitamin E suppliment on their food 2 to 3 times per week.  I dont give it to them every day, because it tends to give them loose stools if they have oils etc too often. I only bathe them if they are muddy or smelly, but every day I brush them with a rubber horse curry comb.  It sitmulates their natural body oils and gets rid of loose hair so shedding is at a minimum.  I swear, you could build another dog out of the hair that comes off these two after they have a living room wrestling match! You wouldnt think short-haired dogs would shed so much....WRONG!

ok, here's my opinion.  Mark is way too full of himself and attitude.  I dont like him.  He burns his best friend bad in the past, and here he is again, up to the same old sh** !The only decent thing about him was that he did fix the poor Lion Boy's face even when he didnt have to.
I never wanted to get addicted to this show....but... it's TOO LATE!

Smudge is adorable! I think that one of the warmest feelings I get is seeing big dogs and little dogs together! Hope that Zeus and Grey are accepting him as their bro. now!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Attempts at a group photo
« on: February 17, 2006, 01:56:53 pm »
Those are good!  I attempted a group shot a week or so ago. I have 2 dobes, a pom, a toy fox terrier, a rat terrier puppy, and I am currently puppy-sitting for my daughter's rat terrier pup that is a litter-mate to mine.  What a circus!!! The little dogs kept trying to climb on top of the big dogs, and Darmok was so busy showing her teeth to everyone so they would all be SURE to know that she was the Queen!  It was funny, but I never got what I set out to get.  Ended up taking pics of them in pairs instead!

Thanks for the help everyone.  As for pics,it's not going to happen anytime soon.  Everytime I pull out the camera she acts like I'm running at her with a rolled up paper.   ???  I'll try again later outside where there's more light and hopefully she won't noice.   ;)

Kelly

I take so many pics of Darmok, that when she sees me coming at her with the camera, she doesnt run away, but she closes her eyes!  She thinks that if she cant see me, I cant see HER!   ;D

Smudge is totally awesome! I think one of the most heart-warming things is seeing big dogs and little bitty dogs lying together in peace and harmony! I love the way they look together.  Hope he helps to fill the big hole that Diesel left in your heart and soul. I'm very happy for your family!

The Bomb guy is Kyle Chandler, and I remember him from a mini-series called 'Home Front', also from "Early Edition'.  I always liked him because he is a very good, believable actor, and when I saw him in last week's episode, I thought (good! he's gonna be a regular in the cast here)...what a way to get rid of the guy! Pink Mist! I thought the writers made him look like a dope when they blew him up, after all, he WAS the bomb guy! The Expert! That stupid bomb sat there idle while all kinds of people had their hands all over it, and even went through a trecherous trip down the hall...and as soon as the EXPERT gets it in his hands, and walks 20 ft away ~kaboom~  I didnt like that at all.  Did you check out the look at the end when the 'wife' comes to let him know that she is ok? Boy, was that a look of disappointment, or what????
