WOW!   What a great day!  As Cricket posted, all the kids were great and had an absolute blast!  We met some interesting folks while we were out there and maybe got a few new members.  It was a wonderful way for all of us to give our pups a  chance to socialize and play togather (and play they did!) as well as for the humans to hang out and share our love and enjoyment of our furry friends.  I'm definitely looking forward to the next time.
A well-deserved shout-out to Tre Fratelli Italian restaurant and to Central Bark Bakery in Pensacola for their incredible hospitality (and great eats!) - if you are ever in Pensacola give them a try and let them know we appreciate it!

Hope that it works out that you can come for just a bit... it'd be great to see you, Dixie and Sugar Bear, but be there in spirit if not!!

Here's my thoughts.. add to them or tell me what you think:
We meet at the park @ 8-8:30, spend a few hours letting the dogs romp & play, and then say 10:30-11'ish we head over to "Central Bark Bakery".  It is a new gourmet dog shop in Pensacola. It is located on 403 South Palafox.

We can also meet @ the Wilcox Exit on I-10 and caravan if anyone wants to do that.

A little article on Central Bark Bakery

These are 2 maps of the location:

I will be there with the 2 big boys.  I am bringing a friend to assist with them who lives in P'cola, so I will just meet everyone there when a time is set.

Hubby wants me to get a 4WD or a AWD.  I am not sure why, my last SUV was 4WD and I dont think I even used it once.
What I would love is a mini-van with the look and feel of an SUV.

The Landcruiser is full time 4WD with a low and lower(sorta) range for true off roading.  I can tell you that full-time 4WD or AWD can make a big difference.... I was crossing the causeway in the middle of that huge (thank you, please send more) storm yesterday and I could feel a little slip here and there, but not often, but as soon as it started one of the other 3 wheels would catch and put a stop to it.  I've driven 4WD off road a million times, but never on road and it is a much more secure feeling than 2WD.

Ok I am still using my hubby old Jeep. I need to make up my mind what I want for me and the fur-babies.  What will hold two people and at least three pyrs. ;)
Tell me what you like or dont like about your mini-van or SUV.

Lisa

I have hauled my boys around in SUVs for a while...  My old Montero and, as of Thursday last, a Landcruiser (no it's not 'new' - lol well it is to me, anyway).  I prefer the SUV to the vans because of the ground clearance (important for hauling horse feed to the barn and jumping curbs at Mardi Gras :-) )and they seem more solid and 'trucklike' to me.  Of course the downside to some would be the more trucklike ride and handling, not to mention the gas mileage, which varies widely from model to model and whether it's 4WD or not, but is never really great.

I've gotten most of the one's that I've seen here but two that I get are:
1) (always from children) 'HOW did he get THAT big??!??!!!'
and
2) His name is Festus???  (for the record, no I didn't name him after a character from the TV show Gunsmoke... He's named Feste, from the fool in Shakespeare's 'As You Like It'.  LOL

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / Re: "Marley and Me" by John Grogan
« on: June 18, 2006, 02:35:00 pm »
I read and enjoyed the book too... It came to me at a great time - my 'great labra-dane retriever', Chance had just come into my life and at 1 year old, he was exhibiting all of the classic obnoxious lab puppy behavior you could name.  The book gave me some great belly-laughs and reminded me that it would be ok and very much worth all the trouble.  There were days and incidents when I needed that reminder. It took a lot of work and twice as much patience but he has matured into just about the best companion that anyone could ever ask for.   I don't think anyone could say that the book's author was 100% where he should have been at all times in terms of making great decisions about the dog, but none of us are, and I think that was part of the point of the book.  :)

I'm going to toss in my vote for danes, with a caveat or two.
My danes have all been very loving and non agressive to a large extent.  One drooled quite heavily but he had mouth damage due to prior abuse.  The others drooled a little except after the afore-mentioned trips to the water bowls.  They do shed, but it is nothing like the longer coated breeds and will not clog your vaccum.  All of my danes are accustomed to being out in public and in crowds and are comfortable with children and adults approaching them.
That being said, 2 years and under they are still basically puppies and to a greater or lesser extent do not have full control of their legs and can be quite energetic and somewhat destructive, though that begins to decrease between 1 and 2.
All of my danes came from rescues and rescue situations and I spent (spend) a lot of time socializing them to other dogs and humans.  That is the key.  Danes can be somewhat aloof and territorial, from what I have seen, if they are not socialized.  I can tell you from experience that my current full-blooded dane is territorial about my car and yard, though only to those he doesn't know and he is fine with them if I am around.  But that is normal dog behavior.
As long as you are willing to make the commitment to socialize and train the dog properly, and put up with a little drool/hair, a dane may be a good fit for you.  Best of luck!

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Re: PEOPLE RANT! I'm fed up!

It's funny, I take Feste to a lot of these type events with the Friends, when I'm not actually working the adoption booth and all that has been described happoens almost every time without fail.  I generally want to tell people that any dog will bite if sufficently provoked, but that just ends up in a huge explanation and frankly by the end of it,everyone is bored and nothing is learned.  I've been know to correct children who were too forward when their parents don't and I heve flat out told people who I don't want to approach him that he might bite in order to keep them away.
When there's a child who is timid, I'll make Feste lie down so to not be so intimidating.  I always like those interactions as I can talk to the child while they are coming up to Feste and praise them for approaching the dog properly.
The really funny thing about all of this is that I have more problems with this at 'dog' events, than when I'm walking downtown, whethwer I have 1 or all 3 of them with me.  You'd think that people who are at 'dog' events would be more aware of their kids in that situation than they would be in others, but it seems to be exactly the opposite!

Great photos!!! The dogs look wonderful!!!
Hey everyone... it was great to see everyone and reconnect!  I'm glad to see Brandon and Lisa's shots came out so well.  It really was a great day for all... we adopted out 17 of 21 dogs and I understand the other groups did well also.  It was also great to see all of the big paws that were there in addition to the members of this board.  The Pensacola dane rescue group, Northwest Florida Great Dane Rescue, had a booth and 2 danes there.  Also in attendance were another Pyr, a very trim (wearing the requisite summer cut, that is) St Bernard and others.  One of the groups there had a pair of 1 y/o merliquin dane brothers that were adopted - I gave that guy the Big Paws web address, as he will definitely have his hands full!  I'm looking forward to the next time we get together!

Feste's done this a couple of times... I finally figured out  that it was after times where he was around other dogs and people a lot - almost like he gets sensory overload like a young child would and instead of acting out, he'd just cower at anything and everything.  I started to keep a closer eye on his reactions and whenever I'd see any signs of it start reassuring him (getting down on his level to pet him, giving him a treat for no reason, make sure my leg was touching his side when we were standing still... that sort of thing).  He hasn't done it in a while, so I'm hoping that it was age and coming from an unstable background that created the behavior.  The longer he's been with me, the more comfortable with unfamiliar situations he has become and fewer of those types of episodes happen.

Just curious but are you using the regular Frontline, or the Frontline plus?  I have also heard that there have been some cases of fake frontline, (esp on ebay) where it is nothing but vegetable oil, but no idea if that is true.

Been using the Frontline Plus.  Used to get it from the vet, but now getting it from the feedstore.  in between I was getting it from a local hardware store.  Tried several outlets thinking maybe I'd gotten hold of a bad or old batch.  Its really frustrating, since I'd gotten used to putting the stuff on them once a month and not woryying with fleas on them or in the house again.  :(
