Food Discussion & Information / Re: Raw diet??
« on: November 10, 2006, 08:24:36 am »
Thanks for the help. Is there a book that has very specific recipe's in it. If I decide to do this, I will need precise recipe's since I am new at this diet. I will be feeding it to my Newf puppy, who will be about 9 weeks old when I get him next month.
Thanks again for the help.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out. The diet seems like alot of work to prepare. Then trying to figure out the suppliments is another problem. Isn't there a pre-mixed natural diet available to make this diet more user-friendly??!!
Thanks again for the help.

I have been talking to different Newf breeders and some are recommending feeding the B.A.R.F. diet (all natural). Does anyone have experience with this diet? Good, bad? Expensive? I would really appreciate any input.
Thanks,

Remembering those no longer with us. / The Rainbow
« on: October 31, 2006, 10:58:52 am »
I just received a sympathy card from my sister about Thunder's death. Thought some might enjoy the words also.

The rainbow comes and goes,
And lovely is the rose,
The moon doth with delight
Look round her when the heavens are bare,
Waters on a starry night
Are beautiful and fair;
But yet I know, wherever I go,
That there has past away a glory from the earth.

                                     William Wordsworth

Thanks for everyone's support during this difficult time.
Thunder knows I'm in good hands.

Glad you are finding this site helpful. I too am a new member and am learning all kinds of things. When Thunder was younger, he would play the "not getting up" game. I found it to be a test of wills. When he would refuse to get up, I'd gently put my hand under him and coax him up. After a while he learned that no matter how long he stayed there, I would not go away until he did as I requested. The problem slowly disappeared. As for water dishes.Yes, Newfies love to spill water all over and get into it. I finally got a heavy, squatty, ceramic bowl that doesn't tip. Works great.
We had to put Thunder, our 7 year old Newf down the other day due to cancer, so we're feeling the loss of our boy at the moment. Hoping to get another Newf in the near future. We absolutely love the breed and need at least one in our lives at all times!! We've had Labs, Saints and Newfs. Loved them all, but there's something very special about the Newfs.
Good luck and welcome to this amazing site.

Thanks for the help. Really appreciate it!! As you say, its tough looking at a list of breeders. Without visiting, you're not sure what you're getting. Just thought if someone could suggest a great breeder, it would be helpful.
Thanks again. I will keep in touch.

Hi Anita,
I see you have 3 Newfies. We just lost Thunder and are considering another one in the future. We got Thunder from a great breeder. He had all the health checks... all clear with no problems. We just had to put him down due to bone cancer. We looked into breeders for over a year before choosing one. Thought we had all the bases covered healthwise, only to find out Thunders father died of cancer, as did his brother also. I don't think the breeder is at fault. She did everything by the book and still had problems.
I know we can't post breeders names, but wonder if you can tell me a little about your breeder, where they are located, if you are happy with them etc.
Thanks for your input.

Although not ready yet, I am anticipating another Newf in the not too distant future. I'm wondering if there are major differences between the large, nationally known breeders and the smaller breeders. I got Thunder from a rather small but wonderful breeder. I was very happy with her and Thunder was a once in a lifetime friend. I don't think she's still breeding... can't get in touch with her.
I'm in upstate N.Y. and heard there is a great breeder in Pa. Does anyone have any input for me?
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Sure do miss my boy, but have great memories. I see you have Lanseers. Are they the same personality as blacks? Gentle, laid back? What can you tell me about yours?
Thanks

Just got home from putting my 7 year old Newfie "Thunder" down due to bone cancer. He made it 4 months after the diagnosis, which was longer than we expected. I've had many different dogs but Thunder was truly sent from Heaven... my very best friend. Don't know what I will do without him. What a sweet companion. I hope I will get to the point of getting another Newf before too long. I love the breed. Today I'm just trying to cope with not having him by my side, but not doing very well. I hope it gets easier in time.
