General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Rocky's 1st Halloween
« on: October 31, 2005, 08:49:31 am »
We had a beautiful day Saturday for Trick-or-Treating. I dressed Rocky up as "Knute Rocky" (Yuk,yuk!) The pants wouldn't stay on but he loved wearing the shirt! :D We sat on the porch and he was sooooooooooo good with the kids!! Even when they would run into the yard or reach out to him quickly, he never growled or even barked!!! He loved the attention and he looked so handsome in his football jersey!! ;D

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Rocky's big day at the dog park
« on: October 15, 2005, 09:34:12 pm »
I was so jealous that so many of you have dog parks in your area that I google searched and found one in my area! ;D We took Rocky and my daughters dogs, Princess Leiah (Rocky's  sister) and Kuma her Akita to the park yesterday. They had a ball! The parents(us) were nervous at first but once we got over that it was a great day. True to his Pyr nature, Rocky had a huge burst of energy then found the best spot to lounge!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Guess what I saw today!!!
« on: October 08, 2005, 10:22:31 am »
I was in Pittsburgh today for the "Heart Walk" and was riding home on a newer toll road. This road was cut through farm land, wooded areas ect and is only about 4 years old. I saw an animal up ahead of me start across the road and then I slowed way down and watched it cross 4 lanes of the highway and then climb a very big hill. When I called my hubby and described him, I thought it was a gray fox. Well I found this videa on the internet and I'm certain it was a coyote :o Years ago they brought them to the area to try to decrease the deer population and now they are killing livestock and creating havoc!! Another instance of man interfering w/ nature!!
click on the attachment below to see a movie clip of a coyote(not the one I saw but it looked like this)

I am heartbroken. I did a really stupid thing and although I deserve it please don't yell- I'm mad enough at myself. I'm starting this thread mostly to educate because I made a big mistake.  Monday night sometime during the night Rocky found a baggie w/ Ibuprophen in it and ate some. I wasn't sure how much was in there but I didn't think it was that much. He seemed ok and I knew that if a human took what I thought he might have gotten (8-10 200mg tabs) that they would be ok. Well last night he urinated 2 times in our room (he never pees in the house) and he was soooo thirsty. He had 2 more accidents so when I came home from work I thought maybe he had a bladder infection(forgetting about him eating the IB) Well after I talked the vet into letting my dad pick up an antibiotic for me tomorrow and I started to remember -- To make a long story short. Rocky is in an emergency hospital for IV fluids and monitoring. His kidney values were elevated. I had called the Pet Poison hotline for help. This may cost up to $2000 and money is not the issue, my stupidity for waiting has cost much more. The vet thinks that the damage should reverse itself but I wanted to warn everyone how dangerous ibuprophen is to pets, they can't metabolize it like humans. (long term abuse in humans does cause damage also)  Please pray for Rocky :'(

By this time tomorrow I should be at Marguarittavil le(sp) sipping PinaColoda's at Myrtle Beach. I feel a little guilty looking forward to this with all the tragedy we've seen the past 2 weeks but that is part of the reason I need this vacation so bad!! So I shall have a drink in all of your honors, just let me know your favorite and I'll try it!!! :D

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Oh my aching head!!!
« on: August 16, 2005, 05:36:19 pm »
I know you guys won't believe this but here goes... The other night Rocky seemed hot so I took him up into my bedroom to cool off. This is usually "forbidden territory" but it's the coolest room in the house so I broke down. I was laying on by stomach between Rocky and my Cairn terrier so they wouln't "have at it" over their rawhide chews.  Rocky decided to get more comfortable so he stood up, did a half turn and sat down...RIGHT ON MY HEAD!!!!! The position I was in and some recent and past injuries of my own made it impossible to get him off. I was face down in the matress with my arms flailing out to the sides yelling HELP, HELP, HHHEEEELLLLLPP PPPPP!!!!!! My husband was on the couch napping and my son was on the phone w/ his GF so no one came!! I guess my head was too lumpy so he finally moved after a few painful minutes. Now this is while he is only 90 something lbs, can you imagine when he reaches his "full potential!!!" :o :o :o

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Down by the river...
« on: August 09, 2005, 07:50:48 pm »
We took Rocky to the river this past weekend. At first he was not so sure. Then he took a plunge and wanted out!!! We then found a better, calmer point in the river and he liked it much better.  When he went back that evening, he showed us why they call it the "doggie paddle". Unfortunately, I stayed home for the 2nd adventure so no pics of him in deeper.  This is the Youghegheny River which is shallow and calm and a nice place to introduce a dog to the water.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Questions about Therapy Dogs
« on: August 08, 2005, 05:25:41 pm »
I was wondering how you qualify your dog to be a therapy dog? Are their classes? I know they have to pass some sort of test but how do you do that. I live in Southwestern PA and my Pyr is wonderful with people. He always waits for them to approach him and he is very gentle with all ages. I live in SW Pennsylvania and there are so many nursing and personal care homes here that I could take him to if he were registered as a therapy dog. Anyone have the 411?

My husband is a real computer geek so he helps me out with alot of stuff I don't know. If you have gotten a red "x" where you thought you posted a picture for your avatar or any picture, it's probably because you never shrunk the pic and it's too big.(byte-wise)
Here's a super easy way to shrink them.  After you have downloaded your pics put your pointer over the picture you want and right click on your mouse. A box of choices will open, go down to "send to" and pick "mail recipient" This will automatically bring up a box that asks you if you want to make your picture "smaller", choose yes. Then email it to yourself.  Open the email and right click on the picture in the email and now choose "save as" and send it to your desktop or a folder that you know you can find. (I know you're thinking - she said this is easy? ???) Now when you post and you have the browse box there, browse until you find it and now that it is smaller, it will post quickly and no more red "x's". Now, if you have no idea what I'm talking about, find a 10 year old kid - they know more than any adult I know about computers!!!! ;)

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Meet Rocky
« on: August 05, 2005, 09:39:39 pm »
Hi! My husband and I have been enjoying this site for awhile and I was starting to feel like a voyer. I finally got up the nerve to try to post. We were the lucky owner of a "feisty" little paws, Cairn terrier, for about 8 years. My daughter got married 2 years ago and instead of giving me grandbabies she gave me "grand doggies". They had a beautiful Akita but that wasn't enough. They decided to adopt a baby girl Pyr. She was a fluffball w/ a gray badger mask and "black eyeliner" that made her so beautiful that she took your breath away. But what truely made me fall in love w/ her was her lazy, quiet, sweet nature.  When I learned that she still had a brother available, I begged my husband to treat me for my birthday. Life will never be the same, in a great way. Although my Cairn is kinda grumpy about his "little" brother at times, we have loved every minute of this adventure.  I have so enjoyed hearing about everyone elses "Big Paws" I wanted to share my joy w/ all of you - so -----Heeeere's Rocky!!!
