Medical Conditions & Diseases / i think i am way too emotional
« on: March 29, 2008, 08:11:09 pm »
or i am just crazy! i have been very upset about peyton becoming a "woman". and she is too. all she does is whine and cry. we keep her in the kitchen with a little fence/gate and so she can still play and if she makes a mess (which she does) we can just mop it up. but she sometimes just lays down and puts her huge head down and just cries. so could it be, that she has cramps? do dogs get them? is there anything us humans can give them? do they make a doggie midol? is midol safe for dogs? i know that when i am "in heat"  ;D i don't feel good and i cry too! am i am way emotional about this? or is she really in pain?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / the big girl

well, peyton is now a lady and not just a puppy. she had her first spot today. we do want to get her fixed. but how long does her heat last. all the things i have read all say 4-27 days. pretty vague. she is 75 lbs. her first heat, good shape and only a year old. one week maybe? other owners have said since it's her first, it will be shorter.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: The best dog treats
« on: February 26, 2008, 10:27:00 am »
peyton will ONLY eat Old Mother Hubbard treats. Pet Supplies Plus was having a sale in January as buy one pound get one free. So we stocked up. We tried another brand and she looks at it and smells it and walks away. But, OMH is also one of the few treats that she does eat that doesn't make her get a tummy ache.

well, let's get graffic as possible...yea h it does look a little bit swollen. but i don't know if that is just from maturing or if it's actually swollen. i am going by my experience in humans and yeah it does kinda look like it could be about her time. maybe that's why she is soo atached to her blankie. but, no blood. and i "heard" that big dogs bleed blg blood. but then i heard that it could just be a couple of droplets. i read about heat in books and online but they don't really go into MUCH detail. i don't care if she is "starting" or not, I just want to make sure she is okay. physically, mentally and emotionally. i know i get emotional as all heck, do dogs? can dogs get cramps? if what i go through happens to her, i don't want her to go through them at all. (we keep dragging our feet on making the appointment only because we are affraid to put her under, ya know?)

Medical Conditions & Diseases / i think peyton might have "the curse"
« on: February 26, 2008, 02:25:51 am »
do female dogs have "heat" symptoms like how female humans do? i ask because in the last 3 days, peyton has become very very whinny. she now enjoys laying next to me on the couch, when before she would naw at me and want me to play. yesterday she decided she would stay in her kennel (with her new blankie) instead of come out and play with me and all she did was whine when she didn't come out. i took the blankie out and then she wanted to play with it, but then about 10 mins later took my hand (in her teeth) and lead me to the couch and pushed me down to sit and jumped on me and went to sleep. i know when i am PMSing i get whinny and want to sleep alot! she is about that age right?!

or is this a sign that is not related and she is telling me she is "old" now and doesn't want to play anymore.  ;D

oh i love american bulldogs! and thank you thank you for suggesting OE bulldogs. I never really thought about that. i would LOVE to rescue them all, but again, darrin has the final vote. and i have already argued that purebread dogs can have just as many problems as rescued. but...he is "bull headed" ;D about it. all i can do is do my part of the research. we keep looking at other dogs in pet stores and such but they are all "mutts" and he doesn't want to help the "not so professional" breeders who sell to pet stores out by spending $700 on a mutt! he used other words, i just made them a little more nicer! :)

anyway, again thanks for you help.

We did research on them about a year ago, before we got Peyt and found that we couldn't afford one (we could the dog but not the proper care for one) but now with darrin's new job, he believes he would be able to pay for it all. I would be taking care of it for the majority though. I (as in ME) have looked into cross breeds of english bulldogs because of the health benefits of them. I would actually really enjoy getting a rescue. But, it's darrin's final vote. He doesn't really see rescues as an option though. He had a bad run in with one. The whole not knowing the background relationships with humans got in the way of learning to know the animal. ya know?!

but...good to know about not being able to post actual names! :) thanks!

darrin really wants an english bulldog and i want to possibly surprise him with one for christmas. by then we will have a fence and he will be making more money!!! yey! (to pay for vets and all) and i want to search breeders but don't even know where to begin. lots of them seem to be scams online. help! thanks!

oh, and do you think they (bulldog and peyton) will be a good match from what you already know of peyton i mean.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: New puppy Great Dane Mastiff mix
« on: February 25, 2008, 09:15:29 am »
i feed peyton (rottie/mastiff mix?) holistic eagle pack for large and giant breeds. she has tummy problems with even some of her treats and that is the ONE brand of food that doesn't make her tummy get upset. sometimes if money is tight, i switch to the different flavors of holitic eagle pack. they have salmon, duck and lamb. she likes them all. and they all like her!

there are alot of people on here who know the % of fats and stuff...you should get lots of advice!

one word...pics!

What breed is she to be so small at 1? not a chihuahua??

i know right! supposedly she is rottie and french mastiff. but the more and more she grows up, i can see the rott, but she is looking more like she is part german shepard.  :-\ hehe. i have had questions (just recently) if she was part dane...and when i told them no...i was asked if she was part basset! haha! one extreme to the other i guess! hehe! way tall to way short! hahaha!

as for knowing what she truly is though, not sure. but...even though this is BPO...she does have way big paws! hahaha!

i googled "baron" and found a few definitions. Power, pride and loyalty. Can you do like a circle with Power Pride Loyalty with the Word Baron in the middle? Almost like a "round robin" So that no word goes before the other in the 3 words.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: I love my dog because...
« on: February 24, 2008, 11:21:12 am »
She has made me a more patient person. I love her because she turned darrin into "daddy" and she knows it. I love how she kisses us with her eyes open. I love how no matter what we are feeling, she always has a smile on her face and tries to make it so that we smile too. That no matter how mad we get, she still wants us in her life. I love how she barks to let us know she wants something and when we don't listen, she takes us by the hand. I love Peyton because she made me "mommy". I love her also because she made us a 3 "person" family. I love her because even if I am chasing her to drop the papertowels she just stole from the table, she ends up making me laugh. I love the way she asks for hugs and then goes to lay down. I just love her.

Can you be completely in love with a dog?

thank you. i think peyton enjoyed her day! she loves her new blankie! she pulled it out all the times she came out of her kennel today. hehe. she ran to her kennel when i told her "ni ni" time. it was sooo funny! i found this "old" pic of her and it made me sad. she is soo big now. we went to the vet on wednesday and had her weighed. she is 74.76 pounds now. YEY! she is a big girl. i think she might get a tad bit bigger, but not much. i think now she will start to fill out more. get more of a barrel chest. who knows. :) all i know is that she is healthy, and that's all i ask for!
